Mariel's Design Tip

"Layer, layer, layer. This is the phase where the space comes to life and really becomes a reflection of the people living there. Gathered lampshades in a funky pattern, baskets of cozy throw blankets, a tray of curious consignment finds on the coffee table, stacks of books, collections of hand-crafted ceramics. And plants. Greenery is so important in creating a room that feels alive - and complete."

Meet Mariel

Mariel Goodson, co-founder of Brass Hill Design , a boutique interior decorating firm outside of Manhattan. Mariel Goodson spent the first few years of her career in the editorial world, writing for magazines such as Better Homes & Gardens , Martha Stewart Living , Good Housekeeping and Redbook . After embarking on a three-year process of restoring and renovating two homes in the suburbs of New York City, she unearthed her passion for perpetual reinvention, eventually trading in her laptop for a hardhat. A traditionalist at heart, Mariel loves textured raffia walls and low-pile Persian rugs, burnished gold accents and lacquered brass fixtures. She hoards handmade ceramics, can’t resist a peacockish powder room and has an insatiable appetite for faux bamboo. When Mariel isn’t elbow-deep in swatches and samples, she’s chasing her three young sons up and down the yellow brick roads of her hometown in Westchester.

"Don't decorate with perfection in mind. The goal should be to create a room that feels collected and curated and interesting. That may mean a riotous mix of prints that speak to you, a bold wall color that just makes you happy, kooky antiques and heirlooms, or something really funky that you just have to have. Go for it - or at least trust your decorator to go for it." - Mariel
